Purpose:
Mechanisms involved in progressing ischemic stroke are little understood. The present study was undertaken to identify potential vascular risk factors associated with progression in acute ischemic stroke.
Materials and Methods : We retrospectively analyzed thirty-six patients with progressing ischemic stroke admitted to Chungbuk National University hospital between March 2001 and August 2005 and compared to ninety-seven patients with nonprogressing ischemic stroke, matched for sex and age. Some hypothetical risk factors(atrial fibrillation, heart disease, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, smoking, hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, elevated light density lipoprotein, hyperfibrinogenemia, high platelet, high hematocrit) have been evaluated.
Results:The prevalence of smoking in the progressing ischemic stroke group was 36.1%, and that of the nonprogressing ischemic stroke group was 19.6%. However, the role of smoking was not found to be statistically significant(p=0.080). There were no significant differences in other risk factors between the progressing ischemic stroke group and the nonprogressing ischemic stroke group.
Conclusion: This study gives no evidence of significant relation between the progressing ischemic stroke and the vascular risk factors. Hence, we need to advance in the search for biochemical markers and for new imaging tags of progressing ischemic stroke.
